INKLUSIVISME DISIMPANG JALAN: Studi Tentang Dinamika Pemikiran Islam Paramadina Di Era Reformasi

INKLUSIVISME DISIMPANG JALAN:
Studi Tentang Dinamika Pemikiran Islam Paramadina

Anticorruption campaign in a neo-patrimonial democracy

Ahmad Khoirul Umam

Dosen Program Studi Hubungan Internasional, Universitas Paramadina

Democracy is expected to be an effective instrument for fighting corruption because it supports citizens to demand accountability and transparency from governments.

Democracy also encourages accountability, independent judiciaries,  political checking and balancing, freedom of the press and law  enforcement. The higher the level of democracy, the more effective are democratic institutions in deterring corruption (Sandholtz and Kotzle,  2000; Blake, 2006).

But democracy does not guarantee the effective elimination of  corruption. In the current Indonesian democracy, many democratic  leaders represented by the elites of political parties are indeed unfavorable to effective anticorruption.

Asia’s rising economies and the space to grow, distribute

Dinna Wisnu, Ph.D

Director of Paramadina University Graduate School of Diplomacy.

It is nice to “grow up”. Indeed, that is the very feeling that should come with economic growth. Busy streets, people working in  high-rise offices, decent houses and healthcare, children with quality education and lively markets are a few indicators of economic growth  going right.

Yet, not everyone is happy. Other countries that have developed for  over a century had earlier complained.

In international forums, the rising economies are urged to share their  growth with ailing Europe and the USA. Numerous “strategic” and “comprehensive” partnerships and forums emerged.

If one looks closer, only few of these partnerships between the  “rising” and “ailing” economies are developed on an equal footing.

The heading may be about transfer of technology or promotion of  education, but barely any local universities or research institutes obtain any genuine upgrade of knowledge.

If one is lucky, a few students or faculty members may be given a few days visiting abroad for projects to hold international conferences or serve as visiting professors to teach a few credit hours. But that’s about it.

Constructing Cohesion of Regional Integration on European Union (EU) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

The integration of European states into European Union (EU) has proved that ideational
forces as well as material forces could generate a strong cohesion of regionalism. The
construction of this body of regionalism has brought several ideational and material benefits to
the members. However, the success story of EU does not necessarily mean that EU can be
considered as the best model for Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This is
partly due to the differences on the objectives and development process of the two bodies of
regionalism.
This paper develops into three major parts. Firstly, it tries to understand how European
regional integration is socially constructed. Secondly, it examines whether construction of EU
organizational model can be adapted by ASEAN. Lastly, it tries to elaborate ideas of European
integration which can be transferred to the ideas sustaining the three pillars of ASEAN
Community: Economic, Security and Social-Cultural Community.
The study suggests that EU as a socially constructed region could not be the best model
for ASEAN, nevertheless, it can be an inspiration for the development of ASEAN. EU
integration lessons can inspire ASEAN in constructing interests, identities and behavior for the
cohesion of the body. Therefore, the ASEAN Community can be a structure like EU. It would be
able to organize actions constituted by collective meanings through discursive and
intersubjective understandings among the members. Using Constructivism as the main
framework of analysis, this study hence can enrich the study of regionalism particularly on the
study of EU and ASEAN.
Keywords: Constructivism, European Union (EU), Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN)
