Abstract

One element of culture is language. Language diversity of each  community are usually closely correlated with ethnic diversity. In the  issue of nationalism, the existence of the language of a group,  always became the basic components that play a role in providing  distinctive features as well as a source of pride for the community  collectively. Ability to communicate with each other is very important  to build bridges with foreign people, and establishing the  notion of a 'nation'. That is why, for nation-builders, efforts to  homogenize a language within a state are paramount because the presence of varying languages can be counterproductive. So how did  the nationalists exploit their language? What influences arising from  differences in the utility of language towards the nationalist movement and its relationship with the state? Referring to the both  of context, the following article will discuss the utility of language in  the issue of nationalism in Spain, especially in the Basque country  and Catalonia. The main focus is the explanation of how language is  used differently by Basque nationalists, that is as exclusive strategies  (anti-immigrant), while the nationalist Catalan uses  language as an effort to build the Catalan culture (assimilation).  Final section concludes that the Basque exclusive strategy and the  strategy of assimilation in Catalan nationalism, played a major role  in explaining why separatism and violence are more dominant in the  Basque nationalist movement than in Catalonia.

Key Words: Language, Basque Nationalist Movement, Catalan  Nationalist Movement,

Rizki Damayanti

Universitas Paramadina - Jakarta

The US turning point and its impact on Indonesia

Peni Hanggarini

Dosen Program Studi Hubungan Internasional

Universitas Paramadina - Jakarta

The United States has turned a new page in 2012 with a strategic policy that could shape a different US posture. Based on the policy, the US will be less prone to wars after officially pulling out of Iraq. This assumption is supported by President Barack Obama’s  announcement of a nearly US$500 billion cut to the 2013 defense budget.

The final decision to call an end to the Iraq war has raised the  question about whether the troop withdrawal created instability in  Iraq. Soon after the withdrawal, 16 bombings occurred across the country and the bomb attacks escalated. While it is true that the task  if maintaining security and stability is now solely in the hands  of the Iraqi government, many argue that the US has won militarily but not achieved stability in Iraq.

John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago argues that a US  presence is essential to create a stable, democratic Iraq. In contrast  to the US departure from Vietnam, Mearsheimer says, the US has  left Iraq with a dysfunctional government.

Menyusuri Apiknya Wellington, Selandia Baru

Aris Subagio

Staf Akademik Universitas Paramadina - Jakarta
